Halloween Lesson Plan Steps
👻Select Spine-Tingling Short Stories
To kick off our Halloween lesson, choose three to four short stories that embody the essence of suspense. For your convenience, I’ve curated a list of chilling tales that are perfect for this lesson:
Ensure each student has a copy of these stories, as they will serve as the foundation for our suspenseful exploration.
🕷️Understanding the Elements of Suspense
Start by outlining the six key elements of suspense that form the backbone of our lesson. We focus on foreshadowing, setting cliffhangers, conflict, isolation, and situational irony. Review the definition of suspense and explore each element with your students, emphasizing their importance in crafting compelling narratives. Check out my Elements of Suspense handout to help get you started.
💀Exploring Suspense through Examples
Next, find examples for each element of suspense. Share these with the class. And, encourage active participation by having students explain how each example illustrates a specific suspense element. You can even turn this step into interactive stations, allowing students to discuss examples from their own reading experiences. I have ready-made examples for each of these elements in my Suspense Examples handout.
🦇 Unraveling Suspense in Short Stories
Dive into the heart of our lesson by reading your selected short stories.
Have students read the stories independently, identifying and marking examples of each suspense element. They should also provide cited evidence for their choices. Students love working on this activity in pairs or small groups to help make the process more fun. If you want to stay organized, I have a Finding Suspense handout to help.
🎃Igniting Creativity with Writing Prompts
Now that your students are really comfortable with suspense, it’s time to spark their creativity. Offer students some creative writing prompts. I allow my students to choose to create their own story or take a peaceful story and rewrite the beginning or the ending. Create guidelines for them for their creative writing piece. I ask my students to write a 250-word writing piece. They must include three pieces of suspense. Don’t feel like making your own assignment? Check out my Halloween Creative Writing Prompts to get started right away.
🕸️Crafting Characters and Settings
Next, gift students a chance to brainstorm their story. Here, they can meticulously plan their characters, settings, events, and imagery, infusing their narratives with spooky elements. Encourage students to jot down ideas, create lists, add images, and sketch out story fragments to inspire their writing process. If you want a graphic organizer, check out my Creative Writing Brainstorm handout.
☠️Mapping Out Suspense
Furthermore, give your students a place to plan out their suspense elements. In this step, students must select at least three elements of suspense that will be integrated into their creative writing pieces. They’ll map out how these elements will unfold in their stories, ensuring a suspenseful narrative. My Suspense Planning Guide has everything you need for this step.
✨ Bringing Tales to Life
Finally, students are ready to craft their suspense-filled stories. Armed with their resources, planning guides, and newfound knowledge, they’ll embark on the writing process, weaving intricate narratives that will keep readers on the edge of their seats. Encourage them to revise, refine, and craft a polished final copy, which they’ll submit for your review. This is the best part of the lesson. Students get the chance to share their creativity with you.
